Preview
The predetermined No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft takes the stage in Week 0 of the college football season, and while this game won’t be competitive, we should see a number of electric plays from Caleb Williams in the two quarters we get from him.
The USC offense is loaded at all of the key positions, but the defense remains unproven. San Jose State may find some success against a vulnerable USC defense – a unit which surrendered the eighth-most yards per play in the country last season – but it won’t matter with Williams on the other sideline.
Lincoln Riley brought in two elite playmakers via the transfer portal in South Carolina running back MarShawn Lloyd and Arizona receiver Dorian Singer, the latter of whom earned first team All-Pac-12 honors.
To San Jose State’s credit, the Spartans did play Auburn close last season, falling by a single score on the road. Of course, Auburn didn’t have Caleb Williams or any serviceable quarterback on its roster last year, so that’s not entirely shocking. Still, San Jose State simply doesn’t have the firepower to come anywhere near matching the output of USC’s offense and will need a miracle to even hang around with the Trojans beyond the third quarter.
San Jose State vs USC Prediction
We’ll see an explosive first half led by Williams to put this game out of reach going into halftime. USC will defeat San Jose State in the season opener, 58-24.
