Rapid recap: Chelsea 1, Liverpool 1

Last year’s tumultuous season is mercifully in the rearview mirror for Chelsea, as the Blues earned a result against the heavily favored Liverpool. The Reds got in front early after a beautiful cross from Mo Salah led to a goal from Luis Diaz, and Salah nearly added another goal to make it 2-0 but was ruled offside by VAR. Axel Disasi countered with a goal before halftime, and Chelsea had a goal of its own overturned by VAR two minutes later.

Key moment

In the 37th minute, Axel Disasi knocked in a goal from point-blank range to draw level with Liverpool. The 25-year old French defender scored seven goals in 99 appearances for Monaco before putting away the equalizer in his Chelsea debut.

This was a huge result for Chelsea, as starting the season with another loss would devastate fans and players alike. With news of the Moisés Caicedo signing immediately following the match, it’s been a dream openening to the season for Chelsea.

For Liverpool, it was a disappointing result for one of the favorites to win the league. Insult met injury with the Caicedo news, and the Reds must regroup and refocus quickly.

Liverpool return home to face Bournemouth on Saturday, Aug. 19, while Chelsea hit the road for the first time this season to take on West Ham on Sunday, Aug. 20.
